I am not a golfer myself but I do know that golf is an important element to many peoples luxury Caribbean holiday. There are many fantastic courses and I would definitely recommend golfing in the Caribbean either as a complement to your holiday or as the main focus if golf is your thing! Read on for more information about the best Caribbean golfing holidays!
The Dominican Republic
is definitely one of the best islands when it comes to golfing in the Caribbean. There are 28 courses on the island and many of them have been designed by famous golfers such as Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Greg Norman.
I would recommend a course called Casa de Campo in the south-east of the island. This lovely gated community is situated in 7000 acres which slopes right down to the sea. There are three courses here so something for every ability.
Non-golfers are also well catered for with many boutique shops, beaches and pavement cafes by the marina. They can also take a boat trip from here across to Robinson Crusoe style islands.
There are also courses near the popular resorts of Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. In Puerto Plata, the Amanera Golf Resort is a lovely course with 10 holes stretching along the clifftop above the Atlantic Ocean (don’t hit your ball over the cliff as it is a long walk down to retrieve it!).
Another popular course in Punta Cana is the equally dramatic Punta Espada at Cap Cana, close to Eden Roc.
Jamaica boasts plenty of excellent golf courses, particularly on its north coast. Negril Hills in Negril is a popular undulating course requiring strategic uphill and downhill play. If you are staying at either Couples Swept Away or Couples Negril , you will benefit from unlimited transfers and complimentary green fees.
In the resort of Ocho Rios, there is a course owned and operated by Sandals called Jamaica Golf and Country Club. If you are staying at Sandals Ochi or Sandals Royal Plantation, you will get unlimited complimentary green fees and transfers to this course.
The main area for golfing on Jamaica, though is Montego Bay. There are three 18 hole championship golf courses. The first one is at Half Moon and is perfect for beginners and offers a golf academy. Nearby is Cinnamon Hill which boasts a front nine overlooking the ocean and a back nine that plays into the hills. Its’ claim to fame is that clips from the James Bond movie, ‘Live and Let Die’ were filmed by the waterfalls here.
The last course in Montego Bay is situated on an old sugar plantation. It is called White Witch Golf Course and if you are staying at Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa then you can get preferential tee times at all three courses.
If you want exclusivity whilst golfing in the Caribbean and like to feel like you are the only golfer on the course, then the Green Monkey at Sandy Lane is the course for you. It is a 72-par, 7343-yard Tom Fazio course and you can only play at this exclusive course if you are staying at the luxurious Sandy Lane Resort. It also comes with a luxury price tag of about £390 per round plus the cost of a caddie – about $50! Probably one of the most expensive golf courses in the Caribbean!
Sandy lane also boasts two other courses – the Old Nine and the Country Club, which are both open to non-guests.
Once again, staying at a Sandals property in St Lucia gives you complimentary green fees and transfers to two great golf courses but both very different.
Saint Lucia Golf and Country Club , which is owned by Sandals, is a par-71 course and is considered one of the most beautiful and demanding in the Caribbean. Sandals also own the nine-hole Sandals Golf Club which gives guests the chance to sharpen their golfing skills with its narrow fairways.
Other golf courses worth considering in the Caribbean are Sandals Emerald Reef Golf Club on Great Exuma in the Bahamas, designed by Greg Norman. It is set alongside a mangrove on a rocky peninsular and has a remote, dramatic feel.
Tierra del Sol on Aruba is an 18 hole Robert Trent Jones II course. It wends its way through cacti and sand dunes.
On Grand Cayman, the Ritz Carlton Hotel has its own course within its grounds. It was created by Greg Norman and plays over a saltwater lagoon.
The lovely little island of Nevis, sister island to St Kitts also boasts its own 71-par course at The Four Seasons Nevis. It is situated beneath Nevis Peak and players can enjoy views across St Kitts whilst playing.
All in all the Caribbean is definitely an excellent place to play golf and there is something for all abilities.
